Outfielder Lucas Costello:
At number 15 on my top 20 player rankings from the past season is outfielder Lucas Costello. Costello, in my humble opinion, was one of the most valuable players on the team. It almost feels like a disservice to place him at 15, but that's just a reflection of how good this Wake Forest team really was.
Costello provided good pop at the plate for the Deacs, slashing .288 with a strong .402 on base percentage. He also had nine doubles and four home runs for the Deacs while driving in 24 runs. Following his freshman year, when he had 51 strikeouts, he proceeded to not reach that total in the following two years combined. What Costello provided most was speed in the outfield, which led to many memorable catches, several of which came in a tight series versus a then-ranked Louisville team. Costello didn't hit as efficiently come postseason time, but still provided good speed in the outfield and on the base paths. He also walked a lot, with three walks against Maryland in the Winston-Salem Regional.
Costello was an All-ACC Academic Team Selection in both 2021 and 2023. He transferred to Miami (FL) this offseason. Similarly to Adam Cecere and Penn State, Miami is in his home state of Florida. I speak for all of Deacon nation when I say that I do not look forward to facing him if Wake Forest does indeed play Miami next year.
I wish nothing but the best for Lucas at Miami!
